More than 50,000 international students have experienced a warm hand of Christian friendship thanks to First Presbyterian Church and five other churches that joined together in 1978 to start the Atlanta Ministry with International Students or AMIS (“ah-mee”), the French word for “friends.” Through AMIS, thousands of visiting students and Atlantans share a meal, attend a cultural event or simply spend time together.

If you have questions or would like more details about the AMIS programs, please contact one of First Presbyterian Church’s AMIS board members: Dona Cooper, Bo Jackson and Jim Munson. You may also visit the AMIS website at www.amis-inc.org or send an email to amis@peachtreepres.org.

AMIS (Atlanta Ministry with International Students, Inc.) has moved their offices to the second floor of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. This program provides a ministry of Christian friendship and hospitality to the 5,000 students, who come from as many as 120 different countries to study in colleges and universities in metropolitan Atlanta.

For Sunday School classes, AMIS coordinates a speakers' bureau of international students and scholars who share their countries' histories, cultures, and religions. First Presbyterian Church participates in AMIS as a cluster ministry with Ebenezer Baptist Church, Northside United Methodist Church, Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church, Peachtree Presbyterian Church, St. James United Methodist Church, St. Martin-in-the-Field Episcopal Church, and the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta.

Amigo Program

This is an opportunity to be a friend to international students during their stay in Atlanta. Rather than providing housing, Amigo volunteers invite students to be occasional guests in their homes and help them get acquainted with life in this city and country. Each year we need 300 American friends.

City Tour

Each year, AMIS organizes and sponsors an all-day city tour for international students. The itinerary includes visits to the Capitol, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center, and the Carter Library. Volunteers are always needed to help conduct the tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Welcome Reception

The congregation, the the community, and the international students attending colleges and universities in the Metro Atlanta area enjoy a concert performed by the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra in Woodruff Arts Center in late October or early November. Following the concert, everyone has the opportunity to get acquainted during a reception in Symphony Hall Galleria.

Thanksgiving Day

Church members invite an international student to share their Thanksgiving meal.

Christmas International House

In December, when many colleges and universities are closed, volunteers serving in this program provide a home away from home for international students. Volunteers serve as host families, providing bed and breakfast and some transportation for students. Volunteers also help AMIS staff organize and provide daytime activities and transportation and serve lunch and supper to the students. Contact the AMIS office to obtain information about the Christmas International House.
