Adult Programs
First
Presbyterian Church of Atlanta offers adults of all ages, single and married,
great opportunities to learn about and grow in the Christian faith. We have
dozens of classes and activities on Sunday and during the week in daytime and
evening hours. New classes and programs are forming all the time, too, based
on the ideas of people like you. Check out this web site to find out what's
new and if you've got an idea, please send an e-mail to youbelong@firstpresatl.org. Sunday Morning Fellowship
Every Sunday
morning, Fifield Hall is open between and after worship services, so that
members and visitors may gather to mingle with other members, meet new ones,
and enjoy coffee, juice, and pastries. Various members of the church take
turns serving as "greeters" for this fellowship time. Adult Sunday School Classes
First
Presbyterian Church of Atlanta offers Sunday school classes to meet
a wide variety of individual needs and interests. Except where otherwise
noted, Sunday school meets at 10:05 am. During the regular "school
year," (September 13, 2009 - May 30, 2010) and at 9 am when we are on the summer schedule (June 6 - September 12, 2010). For more information,
call 404.228.7713. Adult Singles Class, Room 323 Events held throughout the year are open to all adult singles. If you would like to participate in these and are not on the email list, please let us know. Berean Bible Class, Reception Room 171 The Berean Class has a rich history and may be the longest continuously meeting Sunday school class in Atlanta. The Bereans were “critical thinkers who, with study, became believers,” and using that as our format, our class enjoys fellowship, song and thoughtful study. Classes are led this year by Ryan Bonfiglio, a Ph.D student in Biblical Studies at Emory University. We also welcome occasional speakers who discuss the scriptures and the story of our faith with insight, critical analysis and historical context. We invite you to come join us. Community Bible Study, Shelter B415 Taught by the Rev. Charles Black and Rev. Connie Lee, the Community Sunday School class includes First Presbyterian Church members and Atlanta community participants. Please join this diverse group for a unique opportunity for fellowship and learning through interaction, sharing, Bible study, dialogue and reflections on our faith journey experiences. Covenant Class, Room 230 The Covenant Class examines an interesting combination of family and social issues, church history, theology and Bible lessons, all from the perspective of today’s family. Our lively discussions are led by members of the church staff and congregation. Our members are 30-50, have children in Elementary - College, married and interact socially
Discovering God’s Word, Room 317 Discovering God’s Word is a small, informal class, open to adults of all ages. We welcome new people and new perspectives as we explore the meaning of faith, primarily through Bible study. Together we read and discuss the Bible, and other books which deepen our understanding of Scripture and Christian living. Class members take turns leading the discussions, and everyone is encouraged to participate. We also have occasional guest speakers on special topics.
Please join us this Sunday we will begin a study of The Pursuit of God, by AW Tozer. The theme for the book is learning to apprehend God's presence in our everyday lives. Zach Young will lead the class as we look at the Preface and Chapter One. Copies of the book are available in The Mustard Seed bookstore As Christians, we believe that knowing God is critical to making sense of our world and of our relationships with others. It is only as we become aware of our convictions and explore our beliefs that we are able to understand our lives. Join us for coffee, thought-provoking speakers, and discussions.
Harvest is a time to gather up crops so that the community can be fed. In this class, we gather spiritual depth, faith that seeks understanding and a shared experience of God so that we may better feed the community in which we live and worship. All young adults are welcome to join this new class.
The Internationals Class welcomes globally-minded individuals of all ages – both U.S. citizens and International students and residents. We delve pro-actively into the tapestry of diversity present in our world today, and we strive to better understand God’s people by learning more about their history, ethnicity, culture, religious practices, and traditions. Together, each Sunday morning, we explore the problems and challenges of the world, in hopes of becoming better servants of God and God’s plan. For specific program information, please visit our website at http://fpcchimes.org/index.php?pr=international. Or, you can speak to a class member by calling either: 404-234-1632 or 404-219-8654.
The Open Door Class started in 1953 in the old Powell House that was located approximately where Fifield Hall is now. One of its founding members, Dick Whittier, is still a member. During these fifty-six years, the class has remained committed to its initial goal. That goal is to join intelligent minds and strong faith. Its sessions, both lecture and free discussion, have centered on historical settings at different stages of church development, evolution of creeds, history of religious freedom in this country, church in society that is open to all religions, and many more. Discussion leaders have covered the wide range from PhD professors to “hands-on” workers. In short, as one member has described the class, one does not check one’s mind at the door when one enters the class. OURS FOR TODAY, Room B308 This class is for parents of young and pre-adolescent children and presents topics and lessons that focus on the theme of Christ Centered Parenting. We especially welcome new church members to our class. SPIRITUAL LIVING, Room B202 Our class is an informal and talkative group with different class members taking the lead each week. Based on chapters of our selected book we have open discussions about how the material can influence our spiritual lives. Class preparation is not required for attendance. Most class members are in the middle of their lives. Everyone is welcome to join the fun as we share our life experiences. We will be starting with a discussion of Stories Jesus Still Tells: The Parables, by John Claypool. Copies of the book are available in the Mustard Seed, FPC bookstore.
The Upper Room Class is made up mostly of couples with preschool through elementary age children. Our ages on the other hand vary greatly. Our studies and discussion topics often come from the class and while we welcome members of the class to lead, we don’t require it. Subjects planned for this year include CS Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters,
(reading the book is not required), The Gospel According to the Simpsons (watching the show is not required) and straight forward bible study. We encourage any interested people to join us and hope to make you permanent members if you so choose. WOMEN’S BIBLE CLASS, Room 156 Open to women of all ages, this class enjoys a lecture-style format, taught primarily by one the Church’s most revered teachers. Through her insightful lessons, we deepen our understanding of the scriptures and how we can apply them to our own personal lives as Christian women in today’s secular world. This long-standing class maintains its original high standard of in-depth Bible study while enjoying fellowship and offering support to its members. Join us Sunday for coffee, fellowship and an inspiring lesson.
