Adult Programs

First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta offers adults of all ages, single and married, great opportunities to learn about and grow in the Christian faith. We have dozens of classes and activities on Sunday and during the week in daytime and evening hours. New classes and programs are forming all the time, too, based on the ideas of people like you. Check out this web site to find out what's new and if you've got an idea, please send an e-mail to youbelong@firstpresatl.org.

Sunday Morning Fellowship

Every Sunday morning, Fifield Hall is open between and after worship services, so that members and visitors may gather to mingle with other members, meet new ones, and enjoy coffee, juice, and pastries. Various members of the church take turns serving as "greeters" for this fellowship time.

Adult Sunday School Classes

First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta offers Sunday school classes to meet a wide variety of individual needs and interests. Except where otherwise noted, Sunday school meets at 10:05 a.m. during the regular "school year," and at 9 when we are on the summer schedule. For more information, call 404.228.7713.

Berean Bible Class (Reception Room)

The Berean Bible Class welcomes men and women of all ages.   It is devoted to Bible study, prayer and fellowship.  Enthusiastic singing is an important part of each program.  The principal teachers are very outstanding Columbia Seminary students.  Their lessons will be supplemented by a variety of guest teachers including seminary professors.

Covenant Class (Room 230)

The Covenant Class examines a unique combination of Bible lessons, family and social issues and church history and theology, all from the perspective of today’s family.  Our lively discussions and fellowship are led by members of the church staff and congregation.

Discovering God’s Word (Room 223)

This discussion-oriented class, focusing on Bible studies, is taught by class members and occasional guest speakers.  All ages are welcome.

Emmaus Class (Room 227)

The Emmaus Class is a place where those who wish to draw closer to Jesus Christ can learn to recognize Him in the experience of their own lives.  Led by a variety of teachers and facilitators, the class enjoys lively discussions of how scripture applies to everyday life.

Faith and Life (Room 218)
As Christians, we believe that faith is critical to making sense of our world and of our relationship with others.  It is only as we become aware of our convictions and explore our beliefs that we are able to understand our lives.  Join us for coffee and thought-provoking discussions.

Internationals (Room 327)

Formed by dedicated church members to provide a “home away from home” for the increasing number of internationals in our area, this class collectively explores problems of the world while trying to understand God’s plan for us.  This class is for globally minded church members who are interested in understanding other people and cultures.

Middle Ground (Room 222)

This class, for married and single parents ages 35-50, offers opportunities for spiritual growth, service and fellowship.  Topics are varied with guest speakers and class members leading.  Over the next nine months we will study 3-4 different books centering on Christian religion.

Open Door (Room 322)

This group mixes biblical studies with current events to inspire intellectual discussion on Christian principles in everyday life.

Ours for Today, God’s for Eternity (Room 221)

This class for parents of infants and young children offers mutual support and fellowship as we share and learn together what it means to be Christian parents in today’s world.

Seekers & Joiners (Room 102)

This is a 5-week series introducing new and prospective members to what we believe as Christians and Presbyterians and to opportunities for participation in the programs of First Presbyterian Church.  To find out when the next Seekers & Joiners series begins, contact the Church Growth office at pparrish@firstpresatl.org.

Spiritual Living (RoomB202)

This is a lively discussion-based class structured by readings that enrich and deepen our spiritual lives.  The selected book for this year is What’s So Amazing About Grace? by Philip Yancey.

Digging Deeper Into Scripture (Room B308)

Using the Kerygma curriculum, this class is studying the Gospel of John, which offers insights into the nature of Jesus and the meaning of faith.  The class examines the surface story, the underlying message and the meaning of key Greek words John chose to use, particularly in exploring what seems to be a difficult to understand passage.

Women’s Bible Class (Room 156)

This longstanding class maintains its original high standard of in-depth Bible study while enjoying fellowship and offering support to its members.  Monthly there is special music.

Young Adults (Room 323)

A discussion-oriented class for singles and married young adults in their 20s and 30s who are discovering how their faith functions in “real life.”  The class enjoys fellowship through social events, community ministry activities and retreats.

The Upper Room (Room 332)
A class for married couples in their 20s and 30s striving to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.  Topics include Bible study, marriage and parenting and the nature of Christian commitment.  There will be opportunities for Christian fellowship, social gatherings and community service throughout the year.

Bible Study @ FPC

Wednesday Noon Bible Study
This class, which meets from 12:15-1:15 p.m., is led by Dr. Ernest Davis, associate pastor for church growth. Our topic is the book of Romans. Reservations are required for lunch. Call 404-228-7737.

Disciple Courses
DISCIPLE is an extraordinary Bible study program emphasizing disciplined reading of and listening to Scripture. Child care is available for all classes upon request.

New classes will begin in September. For more information or for registration, please call Eve Earnest in the Christian Education Office (404-228-7713) or email her at eearnest@firstpresatl.org

Presbyterian Women
This organization is among the oldest and most active in this congregation and throughout the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Presbyterian Women at this church meet in 12 circles for Bible study, fellowship, and service. Our Presbyterian Women are actively involved in every ministry of the church including the Clothing Closet, Meals-on-Wheels, and the Sunday Prayer Breakfast for homeless persons.

Senior Members: Come On Along
Under the leadership of Betty Smith, this group plans trips and activities in and around the Atlanta area for members and their friends 55 and older. Transportation is provided for all who desire it.

Transportation

First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta has a small bus that provides transportation to the worship service every Sunday morning. For members not on our bus route, volunteers are recruited to provide personal transportation. During the week, the bus provides transportation to shopping facilities in the midtown area for residents of several senior hi-rise apartment complexes.  Contact the Care Ministry office at 404-228-7719 or pkimbrell@firstpresatl.org for more information.

Staying in Touch: Parish Neighborhood Plan
Through the Parish Neighborhood Plan (PNP), "callers" contact on a regular basis four to six other members (individuals or families) to say hello, to see how things are going, and to make sure addresses and phone numbers are current.

Meals and Hospitality
Gathering for meals is a cherished tradition at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. We also enjoy getting together on Sunday mornings for coffee and pastries. Our catering service, Road Shows, prepares and serves all the meals and refreshments enjoyed at the church, including those for weddings and for meetings of civic clubs and other outside groups.

Volunteer Opportunities
For every interest, for those who work or those who are retired, for every age, there is a volunteer job in the ministries and missions of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. The Church Growth Ministry coordinates volunteer recruitment and refers those interested in volunteering to appropriate offices within the church. A volunteer fair is held annually not only to enlist new volunteers, but also to remind church members of the many opportunities for service.
