Today’s Scripture

Luke 2:41-52

Today’s Author

Keith Thompson

In the Gospels, this is the only story we get between Jesus’s infancy and his adult ministry. While I am not a parent, I have gone on my fair share of youth trips and the thought of discovering a missing child after traveling a day’s journey is terrifying. Who knows where he might end up? Finally, his parents find him at the Temple and I can only imagine the deep sense of relief they must have felt. And in true adolescent fashion, Jesus answers with what I think can be read as snark: “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

I love this glimpse into the childhood life of Jesus because it shows us a different picture of his humanity and divinity. Yes, Jesus is fully human and was being raised by two parents who loved him and worried when they couldn’t find him. And yes, Jesus is fully God and had amazing answers for the teachers in the Temple and understands that he is the Son of God.

We read that Jesus only increased in wisdom and in divine and human favor as he aged. It isn’t always easy, but if we can take the time to sit and listen and ask questions, I think that we can learn to be a little more like Jesus. And as Mary treasured Jesus in her heart, God treasures each one of us, unconditionally.

Summer Devotional

God Goes With Us

This summer’s devotional is a walk through the Bible. Join our pastors and staff for daily reflections on scripture passages from Genesis to Revelation. In the beginning, God said, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” Come and see how this covenant promise changes through time yet remains steadfast from generation to generation.

Each Sunday, Chris Holmes will share a short message on the texts for the week, and written reflections will go out every Monday through Thursday morning.

We wish you blessings and deeper faith this summer!
