Today’s Scripture
Today’s Author
Kate Culver
This last year has been filled with uncertainty. Like many people, my family and I have been balancing working from home (and in person), parenting, and trying to maintain some kind of composure. We have made it to summer and when I look back at the last year it is simultaneously hard to imagine and easy to remember the emptiness of last June. The last year has been interesting to say the least; some things have changed, some have remained constant.
The episode we are presented with today is a reminder of the greatest constant of all, God’s character. If we look at the text, Exodus 34 is the second time Moses inscribes the tablets. Moses ends up on the mountain a second time because the Israelites have lost faith and have betrayed the Ten Commandments.
God descends in the cloud, stands with Moses and proclaims, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin yet by no means clearing the guilty.” God very clearly spells out God’s character with no uncertainty - despite betrayal and not without consequences - God is merciful. God remains loyal to the Israelites by forgiving their iniquities.
As I look back on this year in this world filled with uncertainty, I take heart knowing we serve a god who is loyal and balances mercy and justice.
Summer Devotional
God Goes With Us
This summer’s devotional is a walk through the Bible. Join our pastors and staff for daily reflections on scripture passages from Genesis to Revelation. In the beginning, God said, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” Come and see how this covenant promise changes through time yet remains steadfast from generation to generation.
Each Sunday, Chris Holmes will share a short message on the texts for the week, and written reflections will go out every Monday through Thursday morning.
We wish you blessings and deeper faith this summer!
