In these six short verses in Genesis, God forms human beings and gives them authority over and enjoyment of all kinds of things, from fish, birds, and cattle to wild and creeping things. God makes humans in God’s image, blesses them, and gives them their first charge: to go and expand their family and live fully in that big, wild earth, knowing that they have everything they need. But first, people are made in God’s image—imago dei.
We live in a culture dominated by visible images, so it’s hard to conceive of what it means to be made in the image of God. God doesn’t have an image in the way that we usually understand it; the imago dei isn’t like having your mom’s eyes or being able to roll your tongue. It’s something more like sharing in the character of God. As humankind comes onto the scene of history, God’s own character, or likeness, is woven into our being. We are made with love to be beloved, given abundant provision, and called to share abundantly. God is a blessing God, so we receive blessing. God is a provider, so we have what we need. God is a binding God, who has created a web of living things that are bound together. God made us with likeness to God—in the imago dei—and placed us into that web to help care for it, guide it, and enjoy it, as God cares for, guides, and delights in us.
