Today’s Scripture
Today’s Author
Keith Thompson
How many times do the people of God need to be reminded who is the king of kings? How many times do we need to be reminded who is the king of kings? We read that the elders of Israel gather and come to Samuel asking for a king to govern and rule them. Samuel’s sons have been judges for the Hebrews since Samuel got too old, but they have been corrupted by money and power. And not long before that, the Philistines pursued and killed some of Israel’s army, taking the ark of the covenant in the process. The people of God have been through a lot. They have suffered and asked questions, and have arrived at the conclusion that a king will help them navigate life together and amidst other peoples. Hearing their proposal, Samuel alone turns to God. The Lord tells Samuel: “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.”
When we hit roadblocks and face new challenges, where do we turn? As the Hebrews do in this moment, we often turn to earthly things and people to ease our discomfort or sadness. There are wonderful people out there comforting an aching world. It is my prayer that we will understand, like Samuel, that all grace and love come ultimately from the Lord our God, the king of kings.
Summer Devotional
God Goes With Us
This summer’s devotional is a walk through the Bible. Join our pastors and staff for daily reflections on scripture passages from Genesis to Revelation. In the beginning, God said, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” Come and see how this covenant promise changes through time yet remains steadfast from generation to generation.
Each Sunday, Chris Holmes will share a short message on the texts for the week, and written reflections will go out every Monday through Thursday morning.
We wish you blessings and deeper faith this summer!
