Today’s Scripture

Exodus 12

Today’s Author

Katie Sundermeier

The story of the first Passover is described in Exodus 12. It is to be “a day of remembrance” and the people are to “celebrate it as a festival to the Lord.” It is to be observed and honored from generation to generation.

Some of what we are called to remember, however, is a dark and difficult part of the story: the first born Egyptian male children would be killed by the Angel of Death.

How do we wrap our heads and hearts around this? How do we celebrate God’s faithfulness, love and goodness in the midst of so much violence and death?

I call to mind a turning point for me along my healing journey from abuse as a child. I was in the basement crypt below the sanctuary at Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, NY. The Holy Spirit opened my heart and mind to three truths. First, God loves me and is always with me. Second, God is all-powerful and the One who works miracles. Third, God did not protect me from evil as a nine-year-old girl when I needed to be protected.

I had to face the harm that occurred while being willing to consider the role of God and faith as part of my healing journey. We do not have to journey alone. Reach out if you are reading this and need support.

Help me to keep searching for you, the God of healing and justice and love, in the midst of what I know. Help me to celebrate what is good and denounce what is evil, in the way of Jesus. Amen.

Summer Devotional

God Goes With Us

This summer’s devotional is a walk through the Bible. Join our pastors and staff for daily reflections on scripture passages from Genesis to Revelation. In the beginning, God said, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” Come and see how this covenant promise changes through time yet remains steadfast from generation to generation.

Each Sunday, Chris Holmes will share a short message on the texts for the week, and written reflections will go out every Monday through Thursday morning.

We wish you blessings and deeper faith this summer!
