MLK Day 2021

A day, week, or month of service and a call to help others couldn’t be more timely. As we seek to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we reflect on his words, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

The pandemic may keep us from gathering in person, but there are countless ways that we can choose to engage and serve others, and Community Ministries challenges you to commit to one of the service projects listed below and consider making it a regular part of your weekly or monthly schedule. These activities are great for individuals, families, Sunday School classes or neighbors.

PROVIDE LUNCH BAGS to guests experiencing homelessness and food insecurity – You are invited to volunteer for a ‘no contact’ role to purchase, prepare/assemble and drop off lunch bags to FPC Community Ministries. Each zip lock or brown bag to include; Sandwich (choice of turkey, ham, bologna, cheese or P&J), bottled water or small boxed juice, bag of chips, granola bar, mini candy bars, fresh fruit (orange, peach, apple, grapes, etc.) Including a written inspirational or kind note will be appreciated. To sign up and get further instructions, please click here.

PACK AND DELIVER Care Kits - you are invited to purchase and pack into gallon zip lock bags with one care item from the list below; and ship or drop them off to Community Ministries, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Canned Tuna and crackers, Granola bars, Fruit snacks or applesauce cups, Hand wipes, Mini packs of Kleenex, Feminine hygiene products, Tooth-brush and toothpaste, Nail clippers, Razors, Band-Aids, Mini hand Sanitizers, Reusable masks, chapstick, Deodorant, Gum and or Lifesavers, Wash Cloths, Men's and Women's underwear. ORGANIZE A CLOTHING DRIVE for any of the following items – Gloves, Hats, Men’s Sneakers (sizes 11 – 14), socks, and blankets and deliver them to Community Ministries, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

MOBILE BOOK CART - consider donating your new and gently used books (fiction, nonfiction and general genres) to our cart. When our guests come to campus for services, lunches, or the Prayer breakfast, they have a chance to pick up a book to read from The Mobile Book Cart. The stock has gotten low as many have taken advantage of this opportunity to read something new. Books can be dropped off to Community Ministries, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Words of Compassion and Encouragement Project is requesting notes of compassion and encouragement to individuals who receive services. A simple note or word of affirmation can make a difference in the day of one of our neighbors. Please place notes in individual envelopes and we will distribute them with their mail. You may include your first name but not your mailing address.

Community Pen Pal Project - With COVID quarantine it continues to be difficult to connect with our neighbors, but did you know that about 1000 people receive their mail at FPC? If you are interested in building relationships for fellowship With through the written word with our neighbors through Community Ministries, the Pen Pal project is for you! Please contact Kate Culver at kculver@firstpresatl.org for more information.

Take pictures and videos of your service project in action, email the pictures to Marie Wandera at mwandera@firstpresatl.org to allow us to create a photo collage of our members, busy doing God’s work. In Jesus’ words, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40. Thank you.
